The Countdown will continue . . . but not this year

I'm writing this to give some clarification to those of you who were enjoying this years "31 Nights" Countdown, and to offer my apologies for its derailment. I may have jinxed myself by making such a bold proclamation preceding the start of this years countdown:

FYI, this countdown began on Twitter a couple of years ago and was successful enough to attempt again last year . . . unfortunately, I came ill equipped and the countdown fizzled before we got to #1 . . . Major faux pas on my end! This year I'm not going to let that happen again even though the odds are stacked against me with numerous plans, out of town guests, and, oh yes, a wedding . . . mine to be precise! I will be taking a week or so off from work during this time, but I do not plan on taking any time away from the countdown (just don't tell the bride-to-be that little detail ;P ), so rest assured I won't leave you "hanging" right as things are reaching their scariest peak.

. . . Yep, eatin' my words right now.

Fact is, I took the equivalent of a couple of weeks off for both my wedding and to show my guests around. In anticipation of this I plotted pretty much every blog in advance and saved the content to my desktop, I then assembled what I thought I'd need in my absence onto Blogger and set up my facebook page to update itself from the feed. I should have been able to simply hit 'Publish Post' from my iPhone and have everything fall into place. For some reason that was never the case, facebook never seemed to be on the same page. Once I returned to work from my time off I discovered that most of my unpublished posts were no longer stored on Blogger . . . I don't know if I was hacked, or what but it was weird. Resolving not to let those of you reading this down, I set out to recreate the posts I'd lost and try and catch us up to speed (At least I had the content saved on my desktop right?). I got through about 7 and . . . my computer took a shit! No joke, one day BOOM . . . nothing . . . At this point I realized the Countdown was D.O.A. (and that I may be cursed ;)

So yeah, I'm in an awkward position here. On the one hand I don't want to let anyone down or even worse renege on my word, but on the other I don't think it makes much sense to continue a Halloween Countdown in November when everyone's got Turkey on the brain. Plus, a countdown like this works best if it happens ON TIME, with one post a day. With that in mind I will save the content for what should have been this years remaining posts and implement them OR update them altogether for next years Countdown. I will not repeat the posts I published this year, though I may do a recap at the start of next years countdown. I am truly grateful for those of you who participated, and again, I offer my sincerest apologies for not coming through for you.

#17 - Ventriloquist Dummies

Because they freak me the 'F' out! Can you honestly tell me that this guy does not look possessed?

I don't know what it is, but the old wooden dummies are especially creepy, I'm sure the separated mandible has something to do with it, but those damn eyes . . . ghaw . . .

#18 - Alex's Bar in Long Beach, CA

Located at 2913 E. Anaheim Street in Long Beach, Alex's Bar is a cool little dive bar that offers up live music most nights. So why does a dive bar in Long Beach make it on a Halloween themed countdown? Two reasons:

"Gawd-dang that was a strong drink! Why, I could swear a bunch of Lt. Dangles are dancing on stage . . . "

#1 - The decor in the place is amazing! Be it the the red lit hue, the bust of Jesus protecting the liquor shelves, the numerous occult items that dress the place up, or the gaggle of paintings that serve as a disturbing shrine to Elvis and obsession . . . this place is alive with the spirit of Halloween all year long!

#2 - It serves as a filming location for movies and tv shows, among it's current roster: True Blood. Yes, if the pictures above look familiar, that is because you are looking at the same backdrop for the fictitious bar "Fangtasia" from all 4 seasons of the hit HBO show.

For those not familiar with the show, Alex's does not just serve as a simple background for the characters to exchange dialogue, but instead it's a location where many of the shows key events have culminated. Events like this one:

AND if you're feeling a little experimental on your visit, why don't you order up a "Plasmapolitan" made from Tru:Blood itself.

Yeah, True Blood fans a a little obsessed! ;)

#19 - Red State

I was very impressed with Kevin Smith's "Red State" . . . Yes, That Kevin Smith (@thatkevinsmith . . . how's that for a sly plug buddy?), the very same that brought you Jay, Silent Bob, and a slew of other foul mouthed New Jersey outcasts.

I'm not going to lie, I AM a Kevin Smith fan, Clerks, Chasing Amy, Dogma, are all great films . . . Clerks 2 and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, are great fun! But with the exception of some brief instances of dialogue (as heard in the films trailer below), there is nothing in Red State that looks or feels like a Kevin Smith film, and that's a complement. After all it'd be hard to take a film like this seriously if it were minced with too many "dick and fart jokes". No, it's a reinvented, more mature Kevin Smith holding the reigns here.

Red State is classified as a horror movie, and it is, but in the psychological sense of the term. It's essentially Smith's commentary on the institutions that govern our culture (aka: religion and government) and the ways in which people in power abuse them for their own self righteous reasons. It also shines a light on some very disturbing real life current events (take the Westburro Baptist "I Hate Fags" Church for instance) and the logic/illogic behind them.

Red State is not without it's flaws, but exceptional performances by almost all involved prevail and carry the film. The most impressive is delivered by Michael Parks who portrays cult leader Abin Cooper. Smith ran the film in Quentin Tarantino's New Beverly Cinema to ensure the film and it's actors could be eligible for Academy Award consideration . . . with that in mind, if the Academy overlooks Park's for this one, then they are either completely blind, or ruled by politics similar to those that rule some of Red State's more corrupt/mentally unstable characters.

#20 - Monster Island!

STOP WHAT YOU'RE DOING RIGHT NOW AND BUY THIS APP!!!

I am not kidding you, this game will replace Angry Birds!! AND thanks to it's monster theme, it fits into the countdown perfectly! I'm not one to pimp Apps, I haven't ever reviewed one either, but this game is freakin' addicting. I could try and explain the game here in great detail, but just watch the trailer instead and visit Monster Island's iTunes store. The first couple of worlds are somewhat simple (just like Angry Birds), but when you get to the harder puzzles and have to use your "Mini Monsters" in timed combination to get the job done, things get quite exciting! Plus this game is growing and the makers are constantly adding new content, levels, worlds, etc.

It's .99 cents, buy the damn thing already will ya?

#21 - Sedlec Ossuary (Church of Bones)

What do you do when even mass graves can't contain the 40,000 dead piled in your cemetery, all left in the wake of the Black Death? If you were one of the monks left in charge of said cemetery, the Czech Republic's most desirable grave yard in the fourteenth century, the answer was simple: Give a half-blind monk the task of arranging the bones in a way that would make them containable . . . And that's just what happened.

Before we go any further, it might help to understand why the grounds of Sedlec cemetery were so sought after. It seems word spread after an abbot was sent to the Holy Land in Palestina where he filled a jar with dirt from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem (the place believed to be where Jesus was crucified), returned with it, and spread it on the grounds of the cemetery. Many brought their dead relatives to be buried in the Holy Soil and many more infected with the Black Death made their final journey to Sedlec to die on the grounds.

The blind monk created an ossuary below the chapel and consolidated the bones within it. Hundreds of years later, in 1870, Frantisek Rindt was given the task of decorating the chapel with the more than 40,000 bones contained within it. His task included bleaching all of the bones in order to give the room a uniform look. The pictures you see in this post are the result.

There are other ossuary's in the world, but none like this one. Unfortunately I've not yet had the opportunity to travel to Europe, but when I do you better believe I will make a pit stop in Kutna Hora to view this macabre masterpiece.

#22 - The Entity!

The Entity (1981) tops my list as one of the freakiest horror movies of all time! It surpasses even The Exorcist (on the disturbing scale), and I'd be willing to bet even the veteran horror buff loses sleep after watching it at night. It resonates even deeper thanks to it's "this film is based on true events" designation. I have included it every year on the countdown simply because I think it's a film that deserves to be experienced. Unfortunately, it is getting harder and harder to find a copy (even through Netflix), but I do encourage you try to get it in your possession somehow.

So we're clear, The Entity is not a cinematic masterpiece by any means, it's filled with a cheese-ball score, is plagued by overacting, and consists of it's fair share of cliques . . . BUT it also braves territory that no horror movie has depicted in such horrific detail since and there's no upbeat ending dragging this film down. The subject matter is not so easy to digest either, it deals with a woman who is repeatedly raped by an unseen entity and at times the filmmakers share some pretty intense instances of it . . . intense even by today's standards. Actually, the fact that it was even green lit still surprises me.

There is one other reason The Entity will forever hold it's position on my list, it was cemented by the following incident [DISCLAIMER: Without going to great length, I spent my late teens / early twenties living in a house that was occupied by more than just physical beings. Paranormal events did not occur regularly, but when they did they could not be mistaken and were often in the presence of witnesses. The following instance is no exception.] :

I had gathered with a group of friends in my family's living room for a viewing of "The Entity" (my favorite horror movie at the time) while my parents were away on vacation. This was circa 1999 and there were ten of us in all. There comes a point in the movie where the spirit/entity/incubus becomes so angered that it demonstrates it's power by destroying the house it inhabits around the main characters who are trapped within it. Windows blow out, blinds turn to shrapnel, and furniture gets sent everywhere but the floor, the works! Well at the very moment this happens on screen, two sets of heavy wooden venetian blinds (one behind the tv, the other to the right of it) fly up from their respective window sills and smack the ceiling with such a force that it sends everyone in the room dashing for cover. I remember looking over and watching as Sean, who was closest to one of the windows and is anything but a slender/limber guy, literally clawed his way over my friend Charlie, and his girlfriend who were seated next to him on the couch, continue across the end-table and onto the floor in a bee line to the nearest exit. This happened with Road Runner-esque speed all while the other two were simultaneously trying to stand up and dash for the same exit while Sean pushed them back down in their seats in his attempt to escape. Every last one of us followed suit, bolting out of the house, Sean continuing undeterred running straight to his car and speeding away as the rest of us re-grouped on the front lawn.

As the reality of what had just occurred began to set in, the remaining nine of us dwindled to four. It was also about this time that I was overcome with an urge to investigate. Despite having previously experienced unexplained phenomena, I tend to be a natural skeptic who searches for probable and explainable causes. There was little question in this case that what happened was beyond explanation, but I tried to find one anyways. When considering the room had 12 foot ceilings and that the bottom of the window sill was 18" from the floor with the top of it a mere 12" from the ceiling, we're talking about 9 and a half feet of solid wooden venation blinds that were fully lowered and in a semi closed position. The night air was windless, but even if there were a strong gust it would have made no difference because the strength with which I had to throw the blinds to reach the ceiling from their position was much more than any wind I've ever encountered. Plus, in the case of a gust, the blinds would have arched away from the window, much like when I threw them, but when it happened they shot up practically vertical as if thrown upwards from underhand. When added to the fact that both sets did this simultaneously at the point in the movie in which it did and then combined with the houses history, there wasn't much question that we had experienced an authentic encounter with the paranormal.

To this day, everyone present still talks about our "encounter" on occasion. Of the six that fled that night, 4 refused to ever return to the house. To my knowledge only one other person (my brother) besides me ever finished watching the movie. Since then, I've only watched "The Entity" once from start to finish, I had to jettison an attempt at a second viewing with my wife-to-be when the room became utterly frigid as we approached the "famous" scene . . . I thought "fuck this!" and have been done with it since.

I do often wonder about the house though, and it's current owners (if it has any). We sold it about 5 years after the incident above, but in the short time we lived there almost everyone in my family experienced "something". I would imagine the phenomena continues still, but just in case things have slowed down in the years that have passed, maybe I should send a copy of "The Entity" to the old address with a note reading "Happy viewing!" ;)

#23 - Return of the Living Star Wars???

Ok, so even though George Lucas has seemingly licensed Star Wars out to every corner of the galaxy, surely he has his limits, right? Nope! Turns out George is as big a fan of zombies as he is power converters and a long time ago (and by long I mean the last couple of years), in a galaxy far, far away (actually here on Earth) he licensed the following prints and posted them on the official Star Wars site FOR SALE!

If I remember right, it all started with the ILM Halloween invites (above top and below top) intended for employees for their annual Halloween party. Well, they gained so much attention that the images were reproduced publicly. That was followed by an entire book starring Han Solo, Chewbacca, and zombie storm troopers (below, below), which spawned the commissioning of Matt Busch to reinterpret two trilogy's worth of poster art (below all that).

Tell me these wouldn't have made better prequels!

And fittingly, just like the films, the "original trilogy" posters are better too!

I've got to admit, there's something satisfying about this mash up between my favorite space opera and my favorite film genre . . . albeit a little weird and out of place, but satisfying just the same. Apparently I'm not alone either . . .

It seems Star Wars geeks found a way to be even more unapproachable . . .

But I will be the first to admit that it's getting a bit out of hand. Just Google "Zombie Star Wars" to see what I mean . . .

Umm, yeah, totally killing that dress for me . . . thanks . . .

#24 - Pre-CGI Death Scenes!

In other words, death scenes the way only masters of 1980's FX, makeup, and lighting could bring you through the use of molds, models and time-lapse photography! Be it a melting face, rapid aging, toxic wasting, or a Gremlin dying, there was something about this group of 80's death scenes that has not been replicated since the introduction of CGI.

Call me crazy, but in a world where even blood is now crafted digitally, I wouldn't mind regressing to a simpler time when scenes like this were more common place!

And of course, probably one of the most elaborate death scenes goes to Gremlins. AND as luck would have it I can not find a clip that focuses solely on the death scene in question, so do me a favor and watch from 3:30 - 5:50 in the scene below.

Now you can't tell me after watching those clips that CGI holds a candle to any one of them. Example:

#25 - Dead Snow!

We're 6 days into the countdown and I think it's time for a horror movie . . . A Norwegian horror-comedy to be exact!

Just in case you thought I said Romantic-Comedy . . .

It starts with a premise you may have heard before: A group of med. students go on a ski trip in the mountains only to find that THEY'RE NOT ALONE! I know, you've seen this one right? I definitely thought I had too, but while Dead Snow pays homage to the line set by some of the greatest in the genre, after lingering on it for a moment it intentionally crosses it! This film fires on all cylinders and resembles what it might look like if Quentin Tarrintino were to remake The Evil Dead. If you're a fan of horror, this is required viewing. There are a lot of American film references for the horror-nerds, and yes, there are subtitles (get over it pansies) . . . BUT the best part, there are Nazi Zombies!

That's right, fucking Nazi zombies!

Why Nazi Zombies? As it turns out, writer/director Tommy Wirkola "concluded that the best way to enhance the horror and disgust of standard zombies was to give them the Nazi element". And I must admit there is added pleasure in watching a zombie Nazi die.

Be sure to watch the trailer below, and get your hands on a copy of Dead Snow, you won't be disappointed!

#26 - Portugal's Hitchhiking Ghost!

I had considered putting "The Horrific side of YouTube" as #26 on this countdown for it's abundant archive of "real ghost" video's and short horror films made by anyone from aspiring film directors to the next door neighbor with a camera. But, in the end it's just too broad a topic to tackle as a single post. The consideration process was not in vain however, as it did remind me of the video posted below. Be warned, this is one of those videos that "sticks" with you for a while and I do recommend you watch the entire 7 minute clip to get the full experience. Ladies and Gents, I present to you Portugal's Hitchhiking Ghost, or as it's called here "Misterious Ghost Accident in Portugal"

Ok, Ok, for those of you with extreme cases of A.D.D., forward to 4:10 . . . you cheaters you.

#27 - Crystal Head Vodka

Crystal Head Vodka has made the list every year (let's face it, there are some items that are worth repeating) and for good reason, not only is it packaged perfectly for this time of year, it tastes wonderful! The fact that it also happens to be Dr. Ray Stantz's vodka is an added bonus!

#29 - Dexter!

Season 6 just kicked off last night, and I can't wait to see where the show takes us!

If you're reading this list and you haven't gotten on the Dexter bandwagon yet, shame-on-you! I suggest you do so pronto, there're plenty of seasons on DVD to catch up on, and I'm willing to bet that you'll enjoy every minute.

For those of you who may bemoan that "Dexter isn't a Halloween item", and thus should not be on this list, I'll counter with: Killing, blood, and dead bodies every show . . . it fits in perfectly! ;)

#30 - Oddities!

I enjoy "Reality" T.V. about as much as listening to nails on a chalkboard, but I'll be damned if Oddities isn't one of the best shows under that classification!

Come on, where else can you find something like this?

"Oddities" documents life in Obscura, a New York based antique shop that "ain't your grandmother's antique shop". It's run by Mike Zohn and Evan Michelson (the stars of the show), and let me tell you: In this shop, the clients are as bizarre as it's contents, and you're not going to find stranger viewing on t.v.!

"Oddities" can be found on the Science channel and I highly recommend you check out the official site http://science.discovery.com/tv/oddities/ for the show schedule and a number of disturbing (or as I prefer to call them: Awesome!) video clips.

#31 - 365 Horror Movie.com

We're starting the list off strong with 365 Horror Movie.com!

The premise of 365 Horror Movie was simple enough, a guy named Micah (who has a dog named Ash!) set out to watch and review 1 horror movie a day for an entire year . . . fortunately for us, he succeeded! The site left in it's wake is probably one of the most complete of its kind. No exaggeration, I have filled my Netflix (err Quickster) queue with a good number of movies I discovered solely through this site. Micah covers the spectrum of horror movies, and though I sometimes differ in opinion, I find his reviews to be pretty spot on. It's nice to see horror movies reviewed by an actual fan of the genre instead of some movie snob with a literary stick up his rear orifice.

Yes, there are a lot of good things to be said about 365 Horror Movie.com, the interface is great, and you can find whatever you're into with ease. Micah's got things broken down into sub categories of Haunted Houses, Mad Men / Scientists, Slashers, Vampires, Supernatural, Zombies, and Werewolves. That along with featured and popular listings, recommendations and a daily review blog, create an easily navigated site that's fun for all. One of my favorite features is "The Snore Factor Guide", in his own words:

My own little spin on the rating system. The idea here is to give readers a heads up on how quickly you will fall asleep if you start this movie late at night (the best time to watch horror).
Note: 5 “Z”s is a bad thing, 1 “Z” films are the best of the best.

This can be used quite effectively if you're planning a horror marathon party this month. OR, if you're like me and the only time you can squeeze in a horror flick is after the kiddies go to sleep.

My favorite time of year is here once again, Welcome October . . . my how I've missed your crooked smile! October's arrival also signals "Creative Beard's 31 Nights of Halloween Countdown 2011"!!! That's right, I'll be posting one item for each day of October that is in some way, shape, or form related to Halloween, on until we bury her again, for yet another year. I've had quite a lot of fun assembling these lists in the past, and this year marks the first that I will be incorporating facebook. What that means for me is much more work, but for you it means I can provide more "fleshed" out content over years past, even incorporating images and embedded videos when necessary. If you find yourself here and you like what you see, I ask that you be so kind as to give me an oh-so-coveted 'Like', as it will give me reassurances that I'm not just doing this for myself alone.
